SUMMARY:Balsam Bashing!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for some Himalayan Balsam Bashing! \nHimalayan Balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) is an invasive non-native plant that has colonised some of the woodland stands in the Claypits. Balsam spreads exponentially – a single plant can produce 800 seeds disperse over 7m – and can outcompete many of our native species\, tending towards monoculture. To control Balsam\, we need to ‘bash’ the stems at least thrice yearly. \n \nWhat is involved \nBalsam Bashing involves cutting or pulling up the plant below the lowest root nodule before they can go to seed. If cutting\, important to break the root so the Balsam can’t reseed. \nWhat you need \nSturdy footwear (wellies or boots) and clothes you don’t mind roughing it up in. \nWe will provide the following: \n\nA yellow vest and gloves.\nSpades and secateurs to bash balsam\nTea and refreshments\n\nMore on Balsam \nCommon: Himalayan balsam  Latin name: Impatiens glandulifera  Family: Balsaminaceae \nCharacteristics: ‘Low light tolerance. Large flowers producing a lot of nectar attractive to pollinators\, which also helps it spread quickly. Flowers between June and October. Speed pods explosively dispersed.  Primary dispersal is by humans spreading the seeds and along watercourses.’ \nIdentification: \n\nLeaves: long\, pointed leaves with serrated edges\, grow in pairs or whorls of three along stems.\nStems: The stems may be green or a striking red\, often a mixture of the two.\nFlowers: vary between white\, pink and purple with five petals giving a hooded appearance.\nFruit: capsules explode open\, firing seeds in all directions.\n\nHabitat: Riverbanks and wasteland\, gardens and allotments

SUMMARY:Intro to inverts at the Claypits
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an introduction to the Claypits invertebrates!  \nWhile you might be entranced by a glimpse of our roe deer or enchanted by our lively dawn chorus\, it is the little ones\, the invertebrates who make up the Claypit’s richest biodiversity\, with over 200 species. \nJoin us at the Claypits to learn more about the many exciting invertebrate species that make our local nature reserve their home\, as well as some of the methods we use to survey them. \nThe event                   \nMeet at the Applecross entrance to the Claypits\, where we will introduce you to some of our local invertebrates\, as well as some of the equipment and apps used to survey for and identify them. Then we will set off on a walk through the Claypits\, where you are encouraged to have a look to see what we can find. \nWhen and where \n\n10 am\, Saturday 16th July 2022\nApplecross entrance\, beside Scottish Canals HQ\n\nGetting involved \nWe have recently set up a Claypits Invert Monitoring Group to keep track of all our little critters. SUMMARY:Guided Walk: 'Then and Now'\,
DESCRIPTION:You are invited –\nTHEN and NOW\, a talk about time spent in house boats\, water ways. The practice of guddling about and other ways to engage and think about water and with water in the landscape\, in the city\, in the Claypits and in the canals. \nPlease confirm your participation on EVENTBRITE. \nSaturday 23 October  2021\, 10:30AM Start.\nMeet at Scottish Canals Offices at the end of Applecross Street\, G4 9SP. \nHave you thought about the relationship between art\, performance and water? How about the way water moves through the claypits\, how the canal built in the 18th century suddenly got ‘smart’? How about when the first house boats showed up at Applecross or why you might want to touch the water\, be with the water\, and see the land in new ways. \nWho will lead the walk and talk?\nMinty Donald is an artist and Professor at the University of Glasgow based in Glasgow and Madrid. \nNick Millar is an artist and freelance technical manager based in Glasgow and Madrid. \nMinty and Nick’s collaborative art practice focusses on humans’ interrelationships with other-than-human things\, such as rivers\, canals\, and rocks. Minty and Nick lived on a barge on the Forth and Clyde Canal in the mid 1990s. Between 2014 and 2016\, working with Neil McGuire\, they undertook a public art project with and for the Forth and Clyde Canal in Glasgow\, called THEN/NOW. www.then-now.org \n  \n—————————————————————– \nThen on Sun 28th Nov 2021 at TBD –\nJoin us for a walk with Chris O’Connell\, the Heritage Officer at Scottish Canals who will talk to us about the canal as social\, material and cultural heritage. Considering the basin\, its relationship to the claypits and the buildings and programmes that have been revealing lost histories! \n  \n
